Mother’s Day
Today, I'm going to veer away from my usual marketing lesson, since I wanted to share a few thoughts about Mother's Day.
Mother's Day feels complicated for many, including me.
My relationship with my mother was intense and close during my childhood, but as I have grown older, it has become more distant. She lives in Florida now with her husband and we speak infrequently.
Yet I remember always wanting to become a mother. My wish came true in 2010.
My daughter arrived during a blizzard in Philadelphia that buried the city in two feet of snow.
After the nurse handed her to me, I took one look at her scrunched-up little red face, and fell in love instantly.
I became a stay-at-home mom, pulling in small marketing and communications consulting projects on a part-time basis.
Long before it was a thing, I was a remote worker, and already adept with Zoom before the pandemic hit, since it was the only way I could work and see my friends easily.
Today, as a divorced woman and a single mom, I run my own small business, fueled by my desire to help social entrepreneurs and to set a good example for my teen girl.
I also see motherhood all around me as I never did before.
Now I realize that it's not necessary to give birth to a human being to be a mom.
If you create...
If you nurture...
If you mentor...
You are a mother.
And that includes building and growing a business or organization that makes the world a better place.
Happy Mother's Day to you! 💜
