Ever notice how your eyes glaze over when youhit a wall of text online? There's a reason for that!

White space isn't just empty real estate on your screen.

It's a tool that transforms your digital writing from exhausting to engaging.

"But I need to explain everything!" you say.

Look. I understand. I'm an overeducated geek too. I was an English major. Long sentences and paragraphs come with the territory.

But online, it's critical to be concise.

It's great that you want to be thorough. But guess what? Your audience may not need as much information as you think.

if you're too detailed, you'll lose your reader.

Writing and reading online is a different experience than writing for an audience that will pick up a hard copy book, magazine, or document.

It's easier to read long blocks of text when you are holding a physical book or paper in your hand.

But when you encounter it on your phone or computer, it's daunting.

Think about it: when was the last time you eagerly read through a dense paragraphthat stretched across your screen? Probably never!

You probably glanced over it, read a few key phrases, and kept scanning down the screen.

Here's why white space matters:

🧠 Our brains crave structure. White spacecreates visual hierarchy, making information easier to process and remember.

👁️ It gives your readers' eyes a much-needed rest. Digital reading already causes eye strain — don't make it worse!

💡 It highlights what's important. Strategic spacing draws attention to key messages that might otherwise get lost.

To master the white space technique, try these simple tips:

  • Break long paragraphs into 2-3 sentence chunks

  • Use bullet points for lists (like this one!)

  • Add line breaks between sections

  • Incorporate headings and subheadings

  • Use strategic bold text for emphasis

Remember: in digital writing, how your content looks is almost as important as what it says. (Almost.)

Your readers are busy people scanning content on phones, PCs, and tablets. Make it easy for them to consume your brilliance by giving your words room to breathe.

White space isn't laziness or filler — it's thoughtful design that respects your reader's time and attention.
